Councilman John Mullin is running for a third four-year term in District 3. If past performance is the surest indicator of future performance, then the choice is clear to give John another 4 years. He is a business owner and has long been involved at the interface between government and business regulation.
Much of this work involves reducing unneeded bureaucracy, also called "streamlining", improving transparency to increase predictability, which helps to make Poway one of the most business friendly cities in San Diego County.
Mullin also sits on Metro JPA board (deals with one of Poway's largest expenses - wastewater) and has been a key player in reducing our future potential expenditures by developing a wastewater recycling plan. In addition to reducing a huge future impact on our sewer bills (a large part of your water bill), it also secures an increase in the available drinking water supply.
Additionally, he is one of the reasons that the Espola road improvement project is finally getting underway, after almost 20 years of being bounced around the innards of the City government.
Joe Calabrese, a retired owner of Harbor Packaging, decided at the last minute to run against Mullin. He's a funny guy whose sense of humor may be a little abrasive for some, but seems fine to me. Not sure if he's really interested in running as he pulled out of the recent candidate forum held by the Poway Democratic Society. He's run a number of times in the past for the seat and comes with some reasonable ideas. Just not the vast practical experience that John brings to the table.
The choice here is pretty clear:
