Councilman Dave Grosch will run for re-election in District 1. He is seeking a third four-year term. This is really a no-brainer. Dave is head and shoulders above any of his challengers for District 1. And those challengers are good folks too.
Go to any event related to the Poway City government operation, you'll find Dave there, listening and talking to residents. New park or memorial opening? There's Dave. Meeting between residents and developers? There's Dave. Community event or parade? You'll find Dave.
And when he's not at one of those events, he's with the city staff, keeping an eye on Poway's finances (he worked in accounting before retiring). Or planning how to keep more open space available. Or volunteering at one of the local VFWs. You'll find Dave.
You basically could not ask for a more available and responsible City Councilman.
Dave's challengers are:
Jonathan Ryan, a real estate broker who has run multiple times for various offices in Poway. Because of this work, he has a good idea of what Poway likes and needs. Jon has moved his focus to a more District centric viewpoint but has lived here and been civically active long enough to be a good voice for the city. He's just not as good for Poway as Dave.
Peter J. Neild, a semi-retired chief scientist for Jan Medical, Inc. A reasonable candidate, but has way too strong of a focus on districts, and a misinterpretation as to why they were implemented in Poway. A major problem with districts is that it balkanizes the governing area (in this case Poway) and only really works in very large cities or at the state level. Peter wants to bring this type of divisive focus to District 1, and I think that would be to the detriment of Poway as a whole. The real challenges for Poway are to avoid being divided and to focus on recognizing and pushing back against the very real outside interests that generally push for higher density housing.
John Carson, a customer service manager for Motorola public safety radios. Ex-Marine, family man with a good record of volunteering. Couldn't find a photo of him that I could use here. Focus appears to be on parks and quality of life.
Taking all into consideration:
